One distinction is worth holding on to while reading down this list. Most of the stories below are about the land-based industry: casino licences held in New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia, the pokies in pubs and clubs, cashless gaming cards, facial recognition at the door. Those venues are licensed by an Australian state and answer to an Australian regulator, which is exactly why an inquiry can put their licence at risk. Online casino play works the other way round: no Australian licence exists to lose, the operator sits offshore, and the rules that bite are the ones written in the country that issued its licence. A hearing in Sydney changes what happens on a casino floor in Pyrmont; it does not change the terms attached to a withdrawal from a site licensed on the other side of the world.
