Nestled in Michigan's Northern Resort Corridor, Manistee has become a key player in the state's gambling tourism sector, with Little River Casino Resort serving as the local anchor.
As the only casino in Manistee, Little River Casino Resort plays a central role in the community's tourism identity. Owned by the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, the resort property brings together a 1,100-machine casino, table games, and a sportsbook. The casino's resort scale includes 292 rooms and three restaurants, making it a destination spot for visitors to the Manistee area.
The casino gained a major boost in 2020 when it partnered with Rush Street Interactive to run a retail sportsbook and expand its online gambling footprint in Michigan, New York, Illinois and Pennsylvania. The deal was framed around launching a co-branded online sports betting and casino operation statewide once state regulations allowed. Beyond Michigan, Rush Street already ran sportsbooks in Pennsylvania, New York, and Illinois. A retail sportsbook opened at Little River Resort in July 2020 as River Rock Sportsbook. The Little River partnership and Rush Street's existing portfolio helped solidify the casino's position in the broader competitive Michigan market.
That market already featured major nationwide players like BetMGM, FanDuel Casino, DraftKings Casino, Caesars Casino and Golden Nugget. Michigan's gambling landscape has 15 licensed operators, according to Betting News, giving Little River a major competitor to play against in the state. The state's northern region is particularly competitive, with other tribal gambling spots like Turtle Creek Casino, Leelanau Sands, and Odawa Casino vying for the same visitation.

Despite the crowded field, Little River's resort amenities are a major selling point. With its full-service hotel and multiple dining options, the casino is a place where visitors can eat, sleep, and gamble without leaving the resort. That's a major point of attraction for gambling brands and visitors alike. A functional retail sportsbook is also a key selling point as sports betting becomes ever more mainstream.
Little River Casino's investment isn't limited to the resort property – the casino is also leading Gateway, a $91 million downtown redevelopment project aimed at revitalizing Manistee's urban core. Led by Little River Holdings, the economic arm of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, the Gateway will include a parking deck, multi-unit housing, a conference center, and dining options. Phases are expected to complete in 2027 and 2029. Gateway also had some pauses and delays stemming from funding. The update from the project's early stages in 2025 plans a brownfield plan for economic growth and environmental benefits.
With gateway revitalizing the city, riverside casino amenities, its state-defining sports wagers and the draw of Manistee itself, Little River Casino Resort is a key gambling tourism spot in the Great Lakes corridor.
