How to Verify an Offshore Casino's Licence Claim

Checking a licence claim properly takes about ten minutes and answers a question no review site can answer for you: is this operator accountable to anybody at all?

First, be clear what a licence is not

There is no Australian licence for online casino games. Under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, providing them to people in Australia is prohibited, and the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) enforces that prohibition. Any casino offering pokies or table games to Australians is therefore offshore, and whatever licence it holds was issued somewhere else.

That matters for what verification can tell you. A verified offshore licence does not make the service lawful in Australia, does not give you an Australian remedy, and does not put an Australian regulator behind your balance. The five-step check

Step 1 — Find the full claim, not the logo. Scroll to the footer and read the licence statement in text. A genuine claim contains four elements: the name of the issuing authority, a licence or registration number, the name of the company holding it, and that company's registered address. If any of the four is missing, the check ends here with a negative result. A logo alone is an image file, and an image file is not evidence of anything.

Step 2 — Go to the regulator's site yourself. Do not use the footer link. Open a new tab and navigate to the regulator's own website independently, then find its public register of licensees. A badge that links to a page hosted on the casino's own domain, or to a lookalike domain, is the single clearest warning sign in this entire process — a real regulator publishes a register on its own site.

Step 3 — Search the register by company name and by licence number. Both. Searching by number alone can return a record; the question is whether that record names the company the footer named. A number that resolves to a different company is a licence being borrowed, not held.

Step 4 — Read the register entry properly. Four things to check on it:

• Status. Active, current, valid — as distinct from expired, surrendered, suspended or revoked. A lapsed licence displayed as current is a deliberate misrepresentation.
• Scope. The entry states what activities are authorised. A licence covering one product does not cover another.
• Domains. Many registers list the specific websites a licence covers. The site you are on should be on that list. If it is not, the licence does not cover it, whatever the footer says.
• Company details. The name and registered address should match the footer exactly.

Step 5 — Cross-check the terms and conditions. Open the site's terms and find the operating company clause, usually in the first section. It must name the same company as the footer and the register. A mismatch here — one company in the footer, another in the terms — means the entity taking your money is not the entity holding the licence, and the licence is decoration.

The failure signatures

Certain patterns recur, and each one is conclusive on its own.

The badge is an image with no link. Nothing to check, nothing being claimed in a verifiable form.

The link goes to a certificate page on the casino's own domain. Self-issued evidence. A screenshot of a certificate proves someone owns image-editing software.

The register record names a different company. Common with reseller or white-label arrangements where the licence belongs to a platform provider and not to the brand you are dealing with. Your contract is with the brand; the licence is not.

The licence is active but the domain is not listed. The operator is trading beyond the licence's scope, and the regulator's complaints process may not reach your dispute.

The terms name a company that appears nowhere else. The most serious signature, because it tells you precisely who you are actually contracting with and that they have no licence at all.

What to do with the answer

If the check passes cleanly — named regulator, active licence, matching company, listed domain, consistent terms — you have established that a complaints route exists beyond the operator itself. Record the regulator's name and the licence number now, while you are not in a dispute. That information is much harder to gather later.

If the check fails at any step, you have learned something more valuable than a licence number: this operator was willing to display a claim it cannot support. The specific failure is less important than the willingness.

And if the check passes, keep the result in proportion. A licence is a reason for a company to behave, not a guarantee that it will, and no offshore licence changes the fact that online casino games are prohibited in Australia and unlicensed here.
